Hanalei Farmers Market
June 12, 2012
Saturday, June 2, 2012, the vendors of the Hanalei Farmers Market received a notice an hour before closing. It informed them of a meeting that would take place immediately after the market closed that day. At this impromptu meeting, the 56 vendors who depend on the Hanalei Farmers Market to make a living learned that it would be closing. They were told that this was due to Hale Halawai ‘Ohana O Hanalei’s unresolved parking and permit issues and that a threat of litigation was made by whom they would not give a name.
Swift action was taken by the community after the meeting. Thanks to the tireless work of Lori Miller, the Kilauea Namahana Farmers Market graciously invited the displaced Hanalei vendors to join their Saturday market temporarily. Also, community members created an online petition to “Save the Hanalei Farmers Market” which gathered nearly 1500 signatures in three days. And one of the vendors, Heather Shadur, spearheaded the creation of the Save the Hanalei Farmers Market Facebook page, featuring vendors’ stories. Not only did the local community express their opinions about the issue but visitors from all over the world commented as well! Unbelievable support from around the world shows how quickly a community can gather and strive toward a common goal.
On June 8th, 2012, the community was notified that the Hanalei Farmers Market will re-open on June 16, 2012. This goes to show how strong and tight-knit our community is here in Kauai and how loved the Hanalei Farmers Market is locally and globally. It has such a great impact on everyone who visits it and holds the true spirit of Aloha.
